Heightened senses
Another morning of tai ji. Not that I’ve been doing rather religiously… Motivation low these days. And I can’t blame it on the weather in Singapore as I normally do in Scotland. I could always blame it on mosquitoes…
I’ve been doing tai ji at the top level of a multi-storey carpark. It’s quite quiet and with trees surrounding the carpark, it’s quite a nice environment. After a few standing postures, I proceed to a small part of the form, focusing on the transitions. It’s quite taxing and the mind just wanders and gets tired. Nothing to do with the body can’t take it though, coz I could still walk home.
On my way back, suddenly everything sounds very clear. I could hear the crisp sound of my footsteps. I could hear the woman talking to herself (or mobile phone!) far away. I could hear the sound made by the tires of the bicycle with the pavement. All the voices are clearer than normal. What’s going on here? Has anyone got this sensation after practice?

i used to practice on top of multi storey carpark too until past midnight. its quiet up there since nobody ever goes up there. apart from our own block there is nothing much to see. since our block is quite new, the top 3 - 4 floors weren’t occupied and its a quiet walk down after i finish. when i get to a stage of really quietness i sometimes get this feeling i am being watched but there is nobody up there. its a feeling that can raise goosebumps. then i remember a long time ago a taiji master told me that at certain levels of development one can sense something beyond the normal and the only thing to do is to ignore it. if you ever get the chance try practicing at 5 am at the spot where the stairs lead down from the carpark opposite the old SMU school of accountancy in Botanic Gardens. It can also give this kind of creepy feeling at that time of the morning. Right now there is a lot of construction work so I don’t know how the atmosphere is. nowadays i tend to go to the other side where even at 5 am it feels OK……….by the way, did you join sgwutan? its up again

I often feel that my senses are heightened and that I just feel more “attuned” with my surroundings. I recently read in a magazine they recommend either napping, meditation, or yoga to “exercise” the mind as it aids in faster recall. I guess sometimes the mind just needs to rest so it can start again

zenmingsword… i’m no where near that state of mind, but your description of it sounds quite scary! hahaha! i think i’ll just practise at 12 in the afternoon from now on! I do subscribe to the notion that people alive are way way scarier than dead people, but your comment gives me the goosebumps! btw, i’ve joined sgwutan.
wujimon… i’m going to rest my mind now, now that you’ve got me hooked on the live archives thing!
thanks!
