Upgrading wordpress & bookmarking

I’ve been putting this off since last year… and finally, i now can use version 2.0.6. This is my first upgrade since version 2.0 and I’ve been stumped by the backup stage. Anyway, instead of boring you with the details (and also showing my level of stupidity in following instructions!) I’m glad to say that the blog is finally back. A bit late to welcome the new year, but it’s back nevertheless!

I have not been able to see the “dashboard” for some time until now. Something is taking up a lot of memory. So i’ve decided to remove the tag plugin and let a software dedicated to tagging take its place. At the moment, del.icio.us is ranking quite high as the preferred choice for tagging. All I have to do now is figure out how to bookmark. My bookmarks are getting out of hand with every website I visit. It has come to a point where I’ll just drag the website to the toolbar area, and delete it once i’m done with it.

After thinking quite hard about bookmarking on Saturday (until 3 in the morning I kid you not!), I’ve sort of come up with an idea for bookmarking. My goal is to have a system where I can retrieve my bookmarks easily, and I can also input my bookmarks easily, without having to figure out where it should go.

When I first started using del.icio.us, I was thrilled at having a system of bookmarking where i don’t need to think about where it should go, and just add in tags on the fly, literally. After a while, it become quite out of hand where there are too many tags. I probably have used more than one tag to mean the same time (e.g. taiji, taichi).

A new year must call for a fresh thinking right? ;) So, this time round, I am planning to base it on actions as my “base” tags. As I was going through my bookmarks, a lot of them seem to stem from my intention to buy or sell something. That was how it started with an action-based bookmarking system. Other actions include:

  • read (articles, news, blogs etc.),
  • view (statements, photos, videos),
  • play (games, quiz),
  • talk/chat/discuss (emails, forums, social websites),
  • study/learn (courses, institutions),
  • cure/heal (sickness, pains etc),
  • download (music, video, softwares),
  • volunteer/donate (charities).

With these basic actions, I hope to be able to create a system whereby the next time I am looking for a website, I just need to know what I am exactly trying to do and hope to find that bookmark easily. Similarly, when bookmarking a website, I will know why exactly I’m at that website in the first place, and bookmark accordingly. So the next time if I want to buy a DVD (even though i have no intention of buying one in the first place - window shopping!), i’ll go under “buy” + “DVD”, I should find a list of stores available for me. If I want to read blogs relating to tai ji, I’ll go “read” + “blogs” + “taiji”.

At the moment, I’m still trying it out so any comments are definitely welcomed. Of course, we can always try the search function, but i’ll have to know exactly what I’m looking for in the first place! Maybe I just have too many bookmarks. And what’s the cure for a hoarder? Spring cleaning. And since Chinese New Year is around the corner, that might not be too bad an idea!

  1. How should I “read reviews” of “movies” or “watch” “trailers”? What if I want to do both?

How about if I want to “read” “all sites related to Taichi”?

    :D

  2. reviews are “read” and trailers are “watched”? you can’t watch movies and read reviews at the same time, although it may come from the same site, in which case they will appear in both. so, does action based complicate? wouldn’t it be easier just ot have movies from which i can do everything? *deep thought* ZZZzzzz…

for taichi, just go to “read” + “taichi”. it should include all things readable about taichi, be it blogs, articles, websites etc.
