Water analogy for Tai Chi

I think there have been plenty of water analogy on Tai Chi. It’s suppose to be as still as water, as forgiving as water, as fluid as water, as formless as water…

I know it sounds like we’re taking a lot of credit for what we actually can’t do (i.e. to be water), I did think of another analogy to Tai Chi based on water. This time, it’s not the water, but the container for the water.

We know that water takes the shape of the container. If you think of water as force, we as humans will be the container of that force. As the force comes in, we need to be in contact with it to shape the force. That’s how we will be able to redirect it. You see, water, if not contained, cannot be used and redirected. It’ll just flow right by you. Water in a cup allows us to drink. Water in a tank allows us to shower. Water in a tin can allows us to transport water from a tank far away to the flowers that needs watering. A hose can be used as well to contain that water from a pipe to the grass. Without a container, water becomes useless.

So we need to learn to be this container. To be able to hold the water (the force) until it’s ready to be redirected. I found this out while doing my spring cleaning. ;)

Where I come from, water takes another form this time of year – ice. The wind chill was -30F the other day! :-(
