Mentors along the journey

Along my journey within, I have been privileged to chance upon plenty of useful mentors. These mentors come in all forms, shapes and sizes e.g. books, blogs, direct contact with people, or even the river I visited. I would like to take this blog space to thank some of the online presence that has made my own journey within ever more fruitful and exciting. You may find them useful in your own journey within as well.

Steve Pavlina

I have to say, this blog may have started it all. I have never thought of personal development in a more focused way until I came across this blog. It shows that you can actually do a lot of things, IF you put your mind to it. There are a lot of mind expanding (boggling?) stuff in there, so if you keep an open mind, you will learn more.

LibraryThing

This is a place for books. This is a place for people who likes books. The books come together. The people who owns those books come together. You will find someone somewhere out there that has a book collection which is eerily similar to yours. Apart from visiting a bookstore, this is my alternate place for me to find books and then find more books. Because of their collection (easily outstrip any physical bookstore out there), you will really be able to find some gems in here.

The Guru’s Handbook

This blog is a teacher’s inner thoughts, on how to become a better teacher. You won’t find this common, especially among teachers, because there are a lot of conflicts of interest to say what Asher (the author) has to say. Still, Asher is brave enough to share the deeper meaning of being a teacher, and shows an admirable constant quest to become better, by seeking deeper into the heart of teaching.

Karate Thoughts Blog

This is a recent addition to my reading list. I really like how he notice things, and share it in the most amusing way. He focuses on Karate, but the ideas can be applied to many areas, if you read into the meaning of those ideas.

Chiron

Rory teaches about violence, which is a very raw aspect of human. He sees violence a lot, and shows the reality of violence. It’s not easy to overcome violence, and the difficulty is often not what you think. His perceptive view into human nature through violence makes this a thoughtful read.

Design Sojourn

I first started reading this blog when the iPoor T-shirt came out. Ever since then, I’ve been following this blog as it touches on a deeper meaning of design. It shows that with a little bit of design ingenuity, a lot of problems are solved at one go, just like Nudge.

mnmlist

This is a relatively new blog, but written from a seasoned blogger known more for his popular blog Zen Habits. Leo talks about the deeper meaning of minimalism, which touches on design (similar to Design Sojourn) and almost every aspect of life itself. Sometimes, for any journey within, we need to cut out a lot of fluff to get to the core. Minimalism is one way.

wujimon taiji blog

I have to say, I got a lot of tech support from this guy, since the very beginning of shanglee.com. He has been most helpful, and he is also a fellow Tai Chi enthusiast. Do check him out.

Cook Ding’s kitchen

His blog has a strong daoism flavour, and he reads a lot, and I mean a lot. I don’t know how he finds the time. Amazing.

There are of course many many more. I have 140 subscriptions on Google Reader itself. I might compile them to a list of links at some point. But these are the main ones that has consistently helped throughout my journey. I am in the midst of compiling a book list as well. But please remember, these are just mentors who have walked a path that they have chosen. Now it’s time to make our own path. It’s time for our own journey within.

    Hi Shang,

Thank you very much for the compliment. I am humble that you would even consider me as a mentor.

Please keep in touch and do share your thoughts if you can.

Thanks for the link, Shang! I don’t consider myself a mentor nor teacher, just someone along the same path ;) BTW, I have often considered starting up a tech support blog ;)
