I believe that a journey within can happen anytime, anywhere, doing just about anything. It is just hidden in the busy-ness of our lives. Here are a few ways which you can find the trigger. Please feel free to add on your favourite.
1. stare at a long road
Pick a long road. Any road or pavement. Look at the trees or buildings beside it. See how they link to the road. Then look at the spaces in between those trees or buildings. See how those spaces link to the road.
2. run without your ipod
Look at everyone that run pass you from behind. Look at everyone that’s running towards you. Look at the road you’re running on. Look at the sky you’re running under. Look at how your scenery beside you moves backward as you run forward. Close your eyes for 2 seconds and open them again. Look again. See anything different? Now close your eyes longer if possible, without tripping yourself. Sense your surrounding. Sense the impact of the ground on your feet. Sense the breeze on your face. Feel the strain on your muscles. Feel the swing of your hands. Feel the stride of your legs. Remember to open your eyes.
3. play with your fruit
Go to a market. Go to a farm. Open your fridge. Pick up a fruit. Examine the fruit. See the contours. See the colour. See the branches, the leaves. See the texture. Now close your eyes. Feel the contours. Feel the colour. Feel the branches, the leaves. Feel the texture. Smell the fruit. And finally, feel how it will taste in your mouth without eating it. Eat the fruit.
4. go to a lake
Pick up a pebble. throw into the lake. repeat. Try a twig. Try a leaf.
5. sweep the floor.
Look at the floor while sweeping. Look at the dust. Look at the hair. Look at the crevices in the floor. Look at the leaves. Listen to the rustling of the stuff that you’re sweeping. Listen to the sweeping bristles. Feel how the broom feels in your hand. Feel the stretch in your back if you have to bend down. Keep sweeping.
6. wash your clothes by hand
Choose one piece of clothing e.g. your favourite t-shirt. Run some water into a sink / container. Listen to the running water. Use a bar of soap or add detergent. Soak the t-shirt. See how the bubbles form. See how the t-shirt bloats. Listen to the squishing sound. Scrub your t-shirt. Feel the t-shirt in your hands. Feel the soapy feeling. Feel your skin wrinkle. Rinse your t-shirt. Wring it dry. See how the water drips away. Feel the tension in your hands. Feel the tension in your t-shirt. Hang your t-shirt.
7. make a meal, even if it’s just a peanut butter sandwich
Listen to how the bread breaks off from the crust. See how you scoop up the peanut butter. See how the peanut butter dangles on your knife. See what pattern comes off as you spread it on your bread. Bite it. Feel the peanut. Feel how it triggers your taste buds. Eat slowly.
8. doodle
Take out a pencil and paper. Start. Feel the scrub of the pencil lead on the paper. Listen to the contact. See the thickness that comes off the lead. Twist your pencil in different angles. See the effect. Repeat. Try with a pen, crayons, charcoal, sand.
9. make paper planes
Choose any paper. Just start folding. Feel the weight of the paper. Feel how strong the paper is. Fold it a few times. Throw it. See how far it flies. It doesn’t have to look like a plane to fly. You can just crumple it. Repeat. Try a different kind of paper. Magazines or newspapers work just fine.
