Hi. I’m Shang. I’m a Lazyholic. I’m a lazy person. I’m lazy with just about anything. If I have to cut that apple, I won’t be eating that apple anytime soon. So I would choose eating an apple over eating an orange, just because apple is a lot easier to eat. If I can survive without eating, I’ll do it. If I can survive without breathing, I’ll do it.
Of course, I would like to think that I’m efficient. I want things to be done in an efficient way. If I know a better way, I would rather do it that way or not do it at all. That’s my excuse for being lazy. My wife thinks that I’m beyond repair with this lazyholicism. I think I’m only at the beginning stage – acceptance.
See, being lazy is not about NOT wanting to do stuff. Being lazy is about wanting to do only certain stuff. If you ask me to get up and go run, I’ll do it. If you ask me to get up and go walk to no where, I won’t. If you ask me to get up and walk to get the papers, I’ll do it. If you ask me to go shopping, it’ll depend who you are. With my wife, I’ll do it grudgingly. Now you know why my wife thinks I’m beyond repair.
I still think being lazy has merits. And I hope this will prompt you to be lazy as well.
1. Purposeful laziness.
Being lazy does not mean you lie in bed all day. In fact, as you will see with most lazy people, they actually do stuff for 5 hours straight, stuff which you couldn’t do even for 5 minutes, unless you’re as lazy as that person. You must have seen these people when you ask them to get off the couch and take out the trash. They have been watching the television for 5 hours, or playing Street Fighter IV on X-box for 5 hours, or surfing on Facebook for 5 hours, or watching Youtube for 5 hours, or being on WOW for 5 hours (in fact, for most of these activities, 5 hours is a short time…).
The point of being lazy in other stuff, is so that you can focus on the stuff that truely matters to you. I do hope that TV or X-box is not on top of your list of things that truely matters, but imagine if you refocus those energies on things that you feel passionate about, being lazy with other stuff is just inevitable. That is why most business person outsource their household cleaning because they think they can be earning more money out there. Try to resist the temptation to outsource everything in your life… you can never outsource yourself.
2. Laziness paves way to masterness
Now, if you were to focus on one thing and do that thing over and over again, you will become the master of that thing sooner or later. Say I am lazy to do the whole Tai Chi form. So I’ll just focus on one part of the form and do it over and over again. I will be very good at it, but I won’t be good if I were to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again unless I work smart, which brings me to the next point of being lazy…
3. Being lazy is being efficient
Ask any athlete and they will tell you, the more efficient they become with their body, the easier it is to do what they do, be it running, cycling, swimming etc. If you use the lazy philosophy, you won’t even want to contemplate doing it when you can find a more efficient way of doing it. See how laziness paves way to masterness?
4. Being lazy conserves energy
Look, we only have one body and one mind. We can make that body do everything and that mind think everything, but it is bound to break at some point. The body and mind can only take so much over a certain period. Yes, your mind maybe can expand to its full potential where it can control everything and beams laser out of the eyes, but even then, wouldn’t you rather beam it at something that you really want (or don’t want in this case!) than anything else?
There is an opportunity cost when using energy for everything. This just means that when you use your energy to do something, you give up the chance to do something else, which might be the something else that you really want to do. So conserve your energy. Be lazy, because the best part of being lazy, is…
5. Being lazy is fun
Look, I don’t know why but I find great joy in annoying people when I’m lazy. Of course, I hate it when others do it to me. You see, laziness is relative. When you meet with people who are lazy in the same activities as you are, you just found your lazy-mate. You are compatible. If you are doing something you’re passionate, and the other person is just dragging his feet feeling lazy about it, you’ve got to let him go.
Being lazy is about having more fun doing the things you like to do rather than doing the things that you would rather be lazy about.
Try it. Be lazy today. Hope you have a lazy day doing the things you absolutely love.

I feel lazy from 9am to 6pm. I feel excited from 7pm to 12am. If you know what I mean :p
Haha, this post goes against almost everything I write about! But it was funny nevertheless to see if from your point of view Shang. The most I can get from this is that we should do things that make sense. Like you said if someone asked you to get up and run, you’ll do it (I’m thinking because you know it’s good for you). But if someone asked you to walk to nowhere, you won’t (I’m thinking because you don’t want to do something pointless). This was a strange post, but I enjoyed reading it. Nice landing on your blog man.
@moongster: I like your point of view. maybe u should consider expanding the 7pm to 12am into 9am to 12am…
@Hulbert: Thanks for dropping by! I run because I love to run. It’s the simplest thing to do and at the same time the hardest thing to do. Glad you like the landing page.
@moongster: I know exactly how you feel!! Haha…
